His handicap betrays the golfer Christian Nachtwey like. “I can not walk,” he says. Pause. While Nachtwey (born 1963) blabbering the words so easily, as if he asked the caddy for another iron, the interlocutor falters. Only now does the ambiguity of the question dawn on him. Nachtwey smiles. Of course, he knows exactly that the game strength on the green is meant – and that is 21.9.
“In the medium term, I want to reach 17 to 18,” says Nachtwey. A value that already demands a lot of respect from a healthy athlete. In this case, the number combination seems even more impressive. For Christian Nachtwey is just not a healthy athlete. No more! He has been confined to a wheelchair since a traffic accident. On June 6, 1997, his life takes a dramatic turn within seconds. “‘Th 12 complete’ was the diagnosis,” he says. Translated for medical laymen: “Below the belly button I’m paralyzed.”
„It is said that it takes about two years for the head to sit in a wheelchair“,
he says. “I realized this very quickly. And adopted the new situation. “Not to be able to walk, says Nachtwey, was the least problem for those affected.” All other restrictions are much more serious. “For example, the now 15 operations for open pressure points, so-called pressure ulcers “He said that I can forget golfing,” says Nachtwey, instead suggesting that he concentrate on diving or swimming: “Because that’s what I mean still can do together with my wife. “
The gloomy prognosis awakens Nachtweys ingenuity. Dispense with golf because of the disease? No, he is not ready for that. Nachtwey starts to puzzle. In his workshop, he unscrews old electric wheelchairs and put them together again. We are looking for a solution that kills two birds with one stone: off-road capability and upright function. “The first frame I built from wood,” he smiles. “Our village blacksmith had to rebuild the metal frame.” Nearly four years move into the country until all the details have matured.
The patience was worth it. With the help of the so-called Paragolfer (other models are Powergolfer or Motion X4) has become from the supposedly hopeless case now a champion. Nachtwey is one of the elite of disabled golf in Europe. He is now President of the Disabled Golf Club Germany e.V. and regularly awards medals and trophies at international tournaments. To date, the greatest triumph is the European champion title in 2001. In addition, he was already 6 times German champion, several times runner-up and won several titles in South Africa, Denmark, England, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, Holland, France and some more.
Who now suspects that the good results based on hard training hours, which is baffled. “I can not afford that,” says Nachtwey. “I do not have the time.” After all, he is a businessman. Nachtwey distributes the special devices it has developed worldwide. On top of that, he manages the office of the Disabled Golf Club Germany e.V .. partner Bettina (born 1967) is a secretary his right hand. Both are volunteering for the BGC. Out of pure enthusiasm, he says. But with a clear mission. “We want to reduce fear of contact and show people that disabled people in the society and on the golf course are normal and that golf is a very good therapy option for disabled people.
Today, the new Paragolfer 2.0 with the latest technology on the market offers a lot of new freedom to many physically disadvantaged people worldwide. “And it’s always nice to see that my idea, of course with the great support of my wife, puts a smile on many people’s faces,” says Christian Nachtwey.
